Alfried Wieczorek remains chairman of the Kaiserdom Foundation in Speyer!

On Wednesday, November 5th, the annual meeting of the European Speyer Imperial Cathedral Foundation will take place in the city of Speyer. This important date is all about the new elections and the upcoming celebrations for the “1000 Years of the Imperial Cathedral” anniversary in 2030. In this context, chairman Alfried Wieczorek announced that he would run for office again, while managing director Roman Nitsch is also aiming for another term in office. Nitsch has been in his position since 2020 and brings valuable experience from his previous work on the board of the Caritas Association Mannheim.

Wieczorek, who has been chairman since 2022 and was previously general director of the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums in Mannheim, has set himself the goal of doubling the foundation capital from five to ten million euros by the anniversary. These ambitions were announced during a ceremony to mark the foundation's 25th anniversary. The foundation, which was founded in 1999, is committed to promoting both the structural preservation and scientific research of the impressive Speyer Cathedral.

Important destinations and events

A central point on the agenda of the annual meeting is the new elections. Wieczorek emphasizes that, given his main task of coordinating contact with speakers, he would like to limit the maximum number of participants to nine. Numerous significant events and exhibitions are expected to be planned to guide programming in the lead-up to the major anniversary. This also includes the “European Speeches” series, which will continue in November with a lecture by Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg.

The mayor of Speyer, Stefanie Seiler, emphasized the importance of the cathedral as a tourist magnet, as well as the Jewish “ShUM” district. The chairman of the board of trustees, Kurt Beck, also appealed to donors to support the foundation and the cathedral financially. Historian Bernd Schneidmüller and Bishop Karl-Heinz Wiesemann emphasized the central role of the foundation in the preservation of the cathedral, which is indispensable for both the cathedral chapter and the diocese of Speyer.

The role of EU funding

The European level also plays an important role in foundation policy. Financial support can be provided by the Cohesion Fund and the European Regional Development Fund. These programs support local and regional authorities responsible for protecting and promoting cultural heritage. A total of 226 billion euros is available for this, of which around 4.7 billion euros will be made available for measures to create jobs at cultural heritage sites and attract more visitors to the cities in question. Such initiatives could also benefit Speyer Cathedral.

With all of these efforts, the European Speyer Imperial Cathedral Foundation is well positioned not only to preserve tradition, but also to actively contribute to the future of the cathedral. It remains exciting to see how the plans will develop in the run-up to the anniversary and what new paths the foundation will take to achieve its goals.
