Experience the U9 submarine: Guided tours at the Speyer Technology Museum!
In the coming weeks, there will be a very special highlight in Speyer for those interested in technology and history: on October 11th and 12th, 2025, visitors can explore the original U9 submarine as part of adventure tours. These unique tours are offered in collaboration with the Association of German Submariners (VDU) and give an authentic insight into life on board a submarine.
The submarine U9, an impressive example of the U-boat class 205, is 46 meters long, weighs 466 tons and was commissioned in 1967. The technology behind this extraordinary watercraft impresses not only technology fans. During its active service, the U9 traveled an impressive 174,850 nautical miles, which is equivalent to circling the globe eight times. It also spent almost two years (16,478 hours and 11 minutes) under water before it was brought to the Technik Museum Speyer in 1993, where it is now considered one of the highlights.
Run by former submariners
The tours that take place on these two days are led by former VDU submariners. Among them is former commander Jürgen Weber, who will be there in person to share his knowledge and experiences. The format of the adventure tours, which are already included in the admission price to the Technology Museum, does not require prior registration, so that anyone interested can drop by spontaneously.
Visitors can look forward to an exciting journey through the history and technology of submarines. The U9 not only offers a fascinating look at military use, but also at the challenges and experiences that the crew had to overcome in everyday life. Anyone interested can get to know the modern underwater tracking device, the special snorkeling system and the comfortable living conditions for the crew of 21 people.
A part of naval history
The U9 was built by the Howaldtswerke in Kiel and was known not only for its impressive size, but also for its speed when submerged. The special hull shape helped increase speed and the submarine could dive to depths of 100 meters. It is powered by an electric traction motor supported by powerful diesel engines. The entire concept and technology used back then are still of great importance to modern submarine technology today.
The Technology Museum in Speyer has made a name for itself with this exciting attraction and attracts numerous visitors every year. The adventure tours in the U9 submarine are not only educational, they also offer the opportunity to experience a piece of naval history up close. These tours are an absolute must for anyone who is in the region during the autumn holidays. You can find more information about the U9 submarine and other exhibitions on the Technik Museum website.
Young and old, technology enthusiasts and history fans – everyone is warmly invited to immerse themselves in the world of submarines and gain unforgettable impressions.
