Anthem breakdown at youth competition causes excitement in Berlin!
Once again, enthusiasm for school sports in Germany was put to the test. There was an unpleasant incident at this year's national competition “Youth training for the Olympics” in Berlin. Instead of the expected third verse of the national anthem, the first was played, which was an embarrassing situation for the athletes and spectators present. The incident was caused by technical problems, which those responsible tried to resolve as quickly as possible. Nevertheless, this incident is considered inappropriate and casts a shadow on the otherwise prestigious event, which attracts around 800,000 students from all over Germany every year.
“Youth training for the Olympics” is not just any school sports competition, but the largest in the world and includes 27 sports. Established in 1969, the competition has established itself through regional qualifying rounds and national final events. The German School Sports Foundation has been responsible for implementation since 1999. Together with the 16 education ministries of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), the identification and promotion of sporting talent is very important here. There are many exciting events that convey the Olympic values, especially in the age groups and competition classes.
Technical breakdowns and their history
Unfortunately, the problems with playing the national anthem are not unique. They join a long list of anthem mishaps in sports history. During the Fed Cup duel between the German tennis team and the USA on Maui, the national anthem also found itself in the firing line - the first verse was accidentally sung, which angered the German team. Anthem mishaps are a well-known phenomenon in sports. From the 2014 World Cup, where technical problems even meant that no anthems were played, to an incident at the 1985 World Ski Championships, where the GDR anthem was mistakenly played at the award ceremony - the list goes on.
This is a shame for the dignity that such ceremonies usually bring with them. As a rule, they show not only national pride, but also a sense of celebration in competitions that promote talent and open up great future prospects. School sports competitions such as “Youth Training for the Olympics” in particular bring the spirit of competition into young hearts.
A look back at “Youth training for the Olympics”
The event is more than just a sporting event; it integrates schools all over Germany and brings together the best talents from different disciplines. Several federal final events take place annually, including the spring and autumn finals in Berlin and the winter finals at different locations. In addition to traditional sports, the inclusive competition “Youth trains for Paralympics” is also becoming increasingly popular and supports students with different needs.
With the confirmed patron of the competition, the current Federal President, and the support from the education ministries, it is clear how much support this competition has. This also shows that, despite small setbacks such as the anthem faux pas, commitment to school sports in Germany is very popular and continues to be supported.
