Speyer Music Festival 2025: Classical music meets Goethe – a festival for everyone!
In the coming week, Speyer will be all about music. From July 2nd to 6th, 2025, the German State Philharmonic of Rhineland-Palatinate invites you to the twelfth music festival, which has already established itself as an integral part of the region's cultural summer. The festival, which has developed from a pure Mozart festival into a colorful summer festival since 2014, promises a diverse program with symphonic music, chamber music, readings and special offers for families.
The ceremonial opening of the music festival takes place with an impressive concert that combines the sounds of Mozart's C minor Fantasy KV 475 and Beethoven's loud Piano Concerto No. 5. Principal conductor Michael Francis will provide musical direction, while artist in residence, pianist Joseph Moog, will showcase his virtuoso skills.
A celebration full of highlights
This year's festival has a special focus: Goethe's "Faust" and its far-reaching influence on music history. The crowning conclusion of the festival is the concert with Robert Schumann's “Scenes from Goethe's Faust” in the Memorial Church, which is a real highlight not only musically but also emotionally. Contributors include the sopranos Claire Elizabeth Craig and Johanna Winkel as well as the tenor Ilker Arcayürek.
On July 4th there will be the first serenade, in which young talents from the Ernst Boehe Academy and the Colorage Orchestra Academy will perform. The second serenade on July 5th will be performed by twelve cellists from the State Philharmonic and features works by composers such as Dvořák, Grieg and Piazzolla. Particular attention is also paid to the family play “The Earth is Round”, which will be performed on July 5th and 6th and is based on the stories of the late writer Peter Bichsel.
A farewell with honor
On the last day of the festival, July 6th, it is time to say goodbye: Intendant Beat Fehlmann, who shaped the musical face of the festival for seven years, will be awarded the Peter Cornelius plaque for his services to musical life. On the same evening there will also be a reading entitled “Doctor Faust” in the Historical Council Chamber, which will be organized by Matthias Folz and the Duo mon plaisir.
Tanja Binder, head of the culture department, emphasizes the importance of the festival for the region and the community. “Classical music comes to life here, and we are very pleased about the broad support of the population,” says Binder.
Tickets for the festival's seven events are easily available online and by email. This cultural highlight offers something for everyone - music enthusiasts and families are warmly invited to enjoy their free time in Speyer and celebrate the sounds of classical music together.
