New splendor in the German Road Museum: history meets modernity!

It opened on December 22, 2025 German Street Museum in Germersheim reopened its doors and presented a modernized exhibition area. Politicians and the public flocked to the opening, where Minister Daniela Schmitt, Mayor Marcus Schaile and Hans-Ulrich Ihlenfeld, chairman of the Palatinate District Council, addressed greetings to the visitors.

The museum, which was founded in 1989 by a private initiative of road builders, is the only one of its kind in Germany that deals comprehensively with the history of roads and bridges. In an exhibition area of around 5,000 square meters, interested visitors will find a variety of exhibits that illustrate the development and functionality of road construction over the centuries. A highlight of the modern exhibition are the new activity and media stations, which ensure that the visitor experience is further improved.

Support and funding

The modernization was financed by LEADER funding as well as support from the city and the ministry. At the opening, District Administrator Martin Brandl presented a check for 10,000 euros from the Sparkasse Foundation and emphasized the pride that the museum represents for the Germersheim district. Over the last 30 years, the museum's collection has steadily expanded, underlining the great importance of the institution.

Thanks to the comprehensive presentation, the museum guides visitors through the development of road construction from early times to modern times. The early electric vehicles, which have been part of transport history since the early 20th century, are particularly interesting. This development towards electromobility plays a central role in the entire history of automobiles, as does that Berlin Technology Museum reported.

The German Road Museum remains an important educational center not only in Germersheim. It is embedded in an exciting story that is shaped by transport developments and the challenges of the present, particularly with regard to increasing traffic and air pollution. The museum thus offers a comprehensive look at the topic of mobility and its influence on our environment - from mass production to the first electric vehicles.
