Traffic chaos in Trier: The patience of the residents is being put to the test. Since February 2024, drivers have been struggling with massive traffic jams and traffic disruptions on Kölner Straße in Trier. The problems are concentrated on the route between the Trier-West level crossing and the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge, where the city, at the request of Deutsche Bahn, has set up a construction site for a new stop on the reactivated western route. This construction site includes the construction of barrier-free access and elevators, which are an important advance for many residents.
The work was originally scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024, but delays have further complicated the situation. The Trier-West/Pallien local council is frustrated by the ongoing restrictions and is calling for the second lane to be reopened and the connection to Pallien to be opened. According to residents, the traffic problems have reached their breaking point, making the ongoing game of patience a real challenge for many.
Construction site location and current work
Work is currently underway in Pallien on the staircases and elevator towers that will provide access to the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge. Unfortunately, the affected lane remains closed and is currently being used as a construction site. The city has announced that the road cannot be fully opened until all work has been completed. The traffic situation could ease to some extent at the beginning of December 2024, provided there are no further delays.
In addition, the city of Trier is planning to redesign the area around the new stop and carry out renovations on the site of the former Buschmann car dealership. However, a fixed start date for these further renovations has not yet been set. Residents can therefore continue to hope for an improvement, while commuter traffic is suffering from the current conditions.
