Nibelungen Festival: New drama takes viewers into today!
Things get down to business in Worms! The latest drama “See aus Asche. Das Lied der Nibelungen” by Roland Schimmelpfennig will premiere on July 12, 2025. Hired by the Nibelungen Festival, director Mina Salehpour brings the epic piece into the open air above Worms Cathedral. The backdrop, a pebble hill landscape with a small lake and simple white plastic chairs, of course with an artistic touch from set designer Andrea Wagner, creates an exciting setting.
The production opens with Andreas Grötzinger as Volker, the minstrel. It introduces the audience directly to the action, while the main characters, including Kriemhild, played by Kriemhild Hamann, introduce themselves. Hagen von Tronje, portrayed by Wolfram Koch, is skeptical about the light of the present. In a surprisingly modern approach, the characters act as commentators on their own actions. This is particularly impressive in the dramatic encounter between the dragon, played by Jasmin Tabatabai, and the hero Siegfried (Eigin Nilsen Salthe).
A drama full of depth and drama
The drama offers a clear retelling of the Nibelungenlied and deals with explosive topics such as courtship in Worms, dramatic confrontations between Brunhild and Kriemhild, and the murder of Siegfried as well as the tragic self-extinction of his family. In this way, the old epic is cleverly transferred to the present day. This combination of tradition and contemporary issues represents a central aspect of the production.
The Nibelung saga not only has a profound cultural meaning, but also reflects the fights, betrayal and revenge. Kriemhild's revenge on Hagen and her brothers in particular is portrayed as a tragic but also just act. In this way, the famous loyalty to the Nibelungen is expertly staged as a central virtue. Kriemhild remains true to her loyalty to Siegfried, which greatly highlights the conflict and makes the audience think.
A space for dialogue and exchange
While the first premiere of the piece is coming to an end, the cultural center in Worms is not remaining idle. On July 13th, Sunday, the first democracy talk of the Nibelungen Festival will take place there. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Alexander Schweitzer, actress Jasmin Tabatabai and journalist Rüdiger Suchsland, topics such as democratic participation and freedom of expression will be discussed. It's about creating spaces for exchange and dialogue, which the Nibelungen Festival takes up very well as a cultural platform.
The Nibelungen Festival themselves are known for their productions that combine old legends with current social issues. The Heylshofpark also offers a special place for this exchange. Admission to the event is free, and advance registration at info@nibelungenfestspiele.de is recommended to ensure that everyone who is interested can find space.
The combination of dramatic production and profound social conversations makes the Nibelungen Festival a special experience in Worms. Whether on stage or in discourse, emotion and intellect are used here and the time-honored story of the Nibelungs is interpreted in a completely new way.
