Train cancellations and construction sites: Moselle route between Koblenz and Trier affected!
Construction work on the popular Moselle route began today, October 18, 2025, and will last until 4 a.m. on October 27, 2025. During this time the route between Koblenz and Trier will be severely affected. This extensive renovation includes not only the replacement of tracks, but also important modernizations of bridges and overhead lines, which poses major challenges for travelers. The daily news reports that regional train lines RB 71, RB 81 and RB 83 between Koblenz and Cochem will be replaced by buses. From Cochem, passengers can continue by train to Trier, but must expect stops in Trier Hafenstrasse and Pfalzel.
In addition to the regional train, the trains on the RE 1 regional express line between Koblenz and Cochem are also affected and will be replaced by buses. In the evening hours, replacement rail services between Koblenz and Trier will be maintained. The train stations in Lehmen and Kattenes will not be served by the replacement buses. In order to accommodate these passengers, a shuttle service with minibuses has been set up.
Construction work and investments
Deutsche Bahn is investing more than 3 million euros in extensive measures along the Moselle route. The planned work includes, among other things, the replacement of more than 1,000 meters of tracks between Trier main station and Trier-Ehrang, the replacement of 2,000 meters of rails as well as 1,630 sleepers and 2,800 tons of ballast. In addition, the “Fährstrasse” railway overpass in Lehmen is being renovated, and foundation work for auxiliary bridges on the “Heiligenweg” subway in Koblenz is planned, which will not be completed until December 2026.
The range of measures also affects maintenance work in the Kinderbeurer Tunnel between Bengel and Ürzig as well as the cleaning of the Old Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel. In addition to the track adjustments, various track changes will also be carried out in the Koblenz-Mosel and Cochem train stations as well as on the open route between Cochem and Treis-Karden.
Traffic disruptions and diversions
There are also restrictions for drivers. The renovation of the railway bridge in Kattenes will lead to a diversion of traffic via the B 416. This diversion is clearly signposted so that drivers can quickly find the right route again. These construction sites and the associated diversions can have a significant impact on travel times, so both rail passengers and drivers should adjust their timetables accordingly.
Deutsche Bahn expressly apologizes for the inconvenience and reminds travelers to inform themselves in good time about the changes to the timetable and the availability of replacement buses. The timetable changes are updated in connection information and in the DB Navigator. Anyone traveling on the Moselle route should keep this period in mind and travel with a certain degree of flexibility. The Deutsche Bahn provides helpful information about the renovation work and replacement services to accommodate passengers.
