Large-scale operation in Zweibrücken: Fire brigade fights vegetation fire!
On Monday afternoon, June 30, 2025, the fire department in Zweibrücken was called to a major fire that broke out in a vegetation area near Paletten Gölz in Bubenhausen. The alarm went in at 4:19 p.m. and around 25 firefighters with seven vehicles were quickly deployed. The fire had spread over an area of 550 square meters, consisting of dry grass and meadow.
The situation was initially precarious because the fire threatened to spread to the company's adjacent truck fleet. Fortunately, firefighters managed to get the fire under control within 20 minutes. “It was an intensive piece of work,” noted fire chief Frank Theisinger. However, the extinguishing work took more than two hours as numerous embers had to be removed.
Current fire danger and causes
The fire danger is particularly high at the moment, with a warning level of 5 in the forest and 4 on the grass fire index. After the extinguishing work, Theisinger warned urgently of the danger of further fires that could be triggered by small sparks. While the exact cause of the fire remains unclear, it is speculated that a discarded cigarette from the window of a passing car may have played a role.
Unfortunately, such vegetation fires have become more frequent in recent years. Sichere Fire Department reports that the fire department and aid organizations are repeatedly confronted with large fires in forests and open areas. These operations are not only extremely challenging, but also pose considerable risks for the emergency services, some of whom can suffer serious injuries.
Climate change and challenges
An important factor in the increase in vegetation fires is climate change. DGUV highlights that extreme weather events, especially heat waves, lead to an increase in fires. In 2023, the forest area burned in Germany was over 40% above the long-term average, and the number of forest fires exceeded the 1,000 fire limit several times.
In order to overcome the challenges, the fire protection authorities, i.e. cities and municipalities, must take appropriate measures to reduce the risk for their fire brigade members. The right personal protective equipment (PPE) plays a crucial role here. Lighter PPE is recommended, particularly in the case of vegetation fires, often in the form of particle-filtering masks such as FFP2 or FFP3.
The current events in Zweibrücken are another wake-up call for everyone involved. It's obvious: there's something going on! In order to better deal with future incidents, careful planning, preventive measures and comprehensive training of emergency services are essential.
