Lions Club Homburg: 88 multilingual children's books for the library!
In Homburg, reading for children is very important! The Homburg Lions Club recently provided 88 new, multilingual books in the city library. This initiative is not only a celebration for young readers, but also an example of how important multilingual offerings are. The presented collection includes eleven popular reading titles for children aged two to seven, covering seven languages: Arabic, Farsi, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Turkish and Ukrainian, in addition to German. A step that opens many doors and brings families with different cultural backgrounds together, according to homburg1.de!
The ceremonial handover of the books took place on Monday evening in the city library, and there was a moving atmosphere. Also present were Lions Club President Dominik Schöne, his wife Alina, club member Dr. Matthias Engel as well as the library director Andrea Sailer and assistant Nathalie Kroj. Dominik Schöne emphasized the valuable role of the Lions Club in supporting local projects to promote reading skills.“Reading is the key to better education,”he stated, emphasizing the fundamental importance of reading aloud.
More than just books: A community project
Reading is the basis for language development and reading aloud plays a crucial role, as Andrea Sailer and Karolina Engel emphasized during the event. The new books allow families to read familiar stories in their family language, promoting bonding and understanding. And that's not all: the city library also offers a selection of books in English, French and Italian that support multilingual learning.
A special highlight is the upcoming parents' evening on November 26th at 7 p.m., where parents and grandparents will find out how they can support their children in learning to read. The “Read aloud in all languages” initiative is supported not only by the Lions Club, but also by other important organizations such as FRÖBEL and the Reading Foundation.
A strong network for reading promotion
The dedicated helpers behind these initiatives should not be forgotten. Recently, 24 future reading assistants took part in a training weekend in Homburg. This training was offered for the third time by the Institute for Teacher Training and Further Education (ILF) Saarbrücken, the Homburg City Library and the Homburg Lions Club. The aim of this training is to introduce volunteers to the secrets of reading and teaching in order to optimally support children in the first years of school in particular, according to homburg.lions.de.
The training was led by Irina Claren, head of the department at the Kaiserslautern study seminar. The topics ranged from sound synthesis to practical exercises that address hurdles when learning to read. The Homburg project, which has been coordinated by Andrea Sailer since 2015, offers valuable support for children who are just discovering the world of books.
These developments clearly show that in Homburg the lights are green when it comes to promoting reading. It is a collective effort that sends a strong signal to all parents and children - education and reading are treasures that need to be treasured!
