A7 closure over the weekend: 55 hours of chaos in Hamburg!

This coming weekend, drivers in Hamburg will face a challenge. The A7 will be closed for a full 55 hours from Friday, July 18th, from 10 p.m. to Monday, July 21st, at 5 a.m. This measure affects the section north of the Elbe Tunnel, between the Hamburg-Schnelsen junction and the Hamburg-Nordwest triangle. The reason for this temporary closure is the technical upgrade of the Schnelsen noise protection tunnel, including the replacement of all computer components and software after eight years of operation, as ndr.de reports.

For drivers, this means that they have to use extensive detours. A bypass via the A1, A21 and B205 is recommended. Particular caution is required, as traffic jams are also to be expected on these diversion routes. If you are coming from the north, you should exit at the Horster triangle onto the A1 towards Lübeck, then continue along the A21 and the B205 to the Neumünster-Süd junction. For travelers from the south, there are instructions to take the exit at the Neumünster-Süd junction onto the B205, followed by the A21 and A1 towards Bremen, and finally get back onto the A7, as the ADAC explains in detail.

Traffic volume and additional closures

As is well known, the A7 is the longest motorway in Germany with a length of 962 kilometers and serves as a central north-south connection. The section between Hanover and Hamburg in particular is considered to be the most congested route. Over 130,000 vehicles roll between Waltershof and Volkspark every day, highlighting the need for careful planning during the closure. There will also be bottlenecks in the city itself due to possible additional events and the start of the holidays in several federal states.

By the way, there are further planned closures of the A7 in 2025: work on the Elbe tunnel and the tunnel control center is necessary between September 26th and 29th. Maintenance work in the Stellingen tunnel is also scheduled from November 14th to 17th and further tests from December 6th to 7th, as auto-motor-und-sport.de lists.

Another detail that travelers need to note: An additional night-time closure of the Schnelsen Tunnel is planned for August 16th - from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m. the following day. There could be delays here too.

Considering all these circumstances, it is advisable to allow enough time for a smooth journey and keep an eye on the latest traffic reports. Because one thing is certain: the A7 will remain a construction site and a challenge at the same time!
