Büsum under the banner of show jumping: A competition against the tide!

In the picturesque setting of Büsum, in the Dithmarschen district, a very special sporting event will take place on June 22, 2025: the Büsum Wadden Tournament. This unique jumping tournament, which is considered the only one of its kind in the German Wadden Sea, attracts dozens of show jumpers from all over Germany. During the event, the courses must be set up, run and dismantled within just five hours - all before the tide comes in. This challenge brings a whole new dimension to the already demanding jumping competitions in classes A, L and M, which will be held this year on the main beach in Büsum reports NDR.

The organizers didn't make it easy for themselves. “The biggest challenge is nature as a partner,” said Annika Lütje-Freitag, a committed representative of the Büsum riding club. Algae and holes in the mudflats place additional strain on the riders and their horses, while the solid Büsumer mudflats provide a non-slip surface that supports the animals' performance. Despite these challenges, entry to the event remained affordable thanks to the courageous statute of the Büsum Kur- und Tourismus Service.

Particularly diverse supporting program

The exciting competitions are scheduled to begin at around 1:00 p.m., where the A* jumping will kick off. Highlights are the subsequent L-jumping and the M-jumping, the final event of the afternoon, which ends around 5:00 p.m. New this year is team jumping, where three riders can join together to form a team for A-jumping states the Büsum riding club.

An additional highlight is the supporting program, which attracts with music and various gastronomic offerings from 1 p.m. in the Wattstand. Visitors can look forward to cool drinks, coffee and cake as well as the popular bratwursts - this creates a relaxed atmosphere for spectators and participants.

Tradition continues

The Büsum Wadden Tournament has a long history and has been held for almost 100 years. Originally it was primarily a dog race, but over the years it has transformed into an exciting jumping tournament as documented by Pferde Aktuell. Even though the conditions are once again challenging due to nature, those responsible are convinced that the event will offer unique experiences not only to the riders, but also to the spectators.
