Traffic chaos in Hamburg: A7 closed despite Ed Sheeran and public holidays!
There is a risk of traffic chaos in Hamburg this weekend as the A7 motorway is completely closed. From Friday evening at 10 p.m. to Monday morning at 5 a.m., the roads between Hamburg-Stellingen and Hamburg-Heimfeld are impassable in both directions. This is reported by NDR, which also explains the background: The closure is necessary for work on the new tunnel control center, as well as for laying cables and installing shafts. The Elbe Tunnel is also affected by the work.
The situation is made particularly explosive by the simultaneous major events in Hamburg. Ed Sheeran will play in his concert at the Volksparkstadion on July 4th, 5th and 6th, where around 150,000 fans are expected. Fans arriving from the north will be routed via Hamburg-Stellingen, while visitors from the south should come via the Elbe bridges. In order to overcome the challenges of traffic, FKP Scorpio Group and Autobahn GmbH have recommended traveling by public transport, such as the S-Bahn lines S3 and S5, which operate more frequently on these days. In addition, the Schlagermove, a large parade with many visitors, is taking place on Saturday and streets in St. Pauli have to be closed.
Detours and traffic management
There are clear diversions for drivers: national traffic is routed via the A1, A21 and B205, while inner-city diversions are signposted. Shopping is also expected in the city center on Sunday, where 400,000 visitors will also be there. A caravan with 50 trucks will drive through the city on Saturday, which could lead to further restrictions.
The Hamburg S-Bahn will increase its service at the weekend, with a 10-minute service on lines S1, S2, S3 and S5, especially on Saturdays. The authorities are also using special trains to cope with the rush of concert goers and other participants. The VDV reports on current developments in local public transport, which play an important role, particularly in such situations.
Tips for visitors
Concert goers and event participants are urged to allow sufficient time for their arrival. Alternatively, the organizers also recommend cycling to avoid possible traffic jams. The dynamic directions that are available along the way are intended to make the journey easier for drivers and ensure less confusion.
In the period from Friday to Monday, drivers face a major challenge in terms of traffic management - characterized by the necessary infrastructure work and the extensive events. So it remains to be hoped that, despite the difficulties, all of the warmly welcomed 150,000 fans and the participants in the Schlagermove can experience an unforgettable weekend.
