A colorful lantern parade through Geesthacht on Thursday evening was overshadowed by two traffic accidents in which fortunately only minor injuries were reported. Firefighters were called to the incident while children lit up the streets with their glowing lanterns.

The first accident occurred around 5 p.m. on Mühlenstrasse, at the corner of Sandstrasse. A car rammed a parked vehicle there. Fire chief Sascha Tönnies announced in an interview that the situation was dealt with quickly. “We were there quickly and were able to help the driver,” he noted.

Accidents in the evening

The second incident followed around 8:10 p.m. on Geesthachter Straße (B 404) in the Düneberg district. A female Ford driver hit the Mercedes of a male driver who was braking due to traffic. An emergency medical vehicle was quickly at the scene of the accident. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. Nevertheless, the fire brigade had to move out to push the damaged Ford aside and remove spilled fuel and debris. “We want to get traffic flowing again as quickly as possible,” Tönnies continued.

An attentive readership is now wondering what is behind such accidents. According to the Statistics from the Federal Statistical Office Traffic accidents are often caused by human error or unforeseen circumstances. The data collected shows that accidents are a vexing issue not only in rural areas but also in urban areas.
