Kiel Week 2025: Police draw positive conclusions despite large number of visitors!
From the police's perspective, Kiel Week 2025 will be remarkably quiet and peaceful. According to NDR, over a million visitors are expected. Compared to the previous year, the numbers show an encouraging trend: as of Wednesday morning, only 70 crimes were registered, which means a decrease of 10 compared to 2024.
It is noticeable that there were also fewer incidents of brutality crimes, which include robbery, assault and other crimes. While 44 such crimes were reported in 2024, there have been 38 crimes so far this year, most of which were concentrated in the evening hours on Friday and Saturday. In the current reporting period from Friday lunchtime to Wednesday morning, the police authorities issued 37 expulsions, mostly in the area of the main train station, where 10 helpless people were also found.
Effective security concepts
Nevertheless, the security forces draw an overall positive interim conclusion given the circumstances. In the current operational concept, the police benefited from the fact that more than 100 officers and service dogs were on duty every day, especially at Kiel Central Station. Weapons checks were also carried out, and the motto “No place for knives” is proving to be effective: seven knives and a blank gun were seized, while 17 people violated the ban on carrying weapons.
The Presseportal also reports that the event was peaceful, which was helped by the high number of visitors at the weekend. One-way street regulations and mobile guards from certain times helped to direct the flow of people and increase the feeling of security. The railway has also increased its connections to meet the high demand.
Review of the first weekend
Looking back on the first weekend, the police also come to the conclusion that despite the high number of visitors and the associated challenges, the festival can be classified as successful. From Friday to Sunday, a total of 23 reports were filed, 14 of which were for bodily harm - a significant decrease compared to 54 reports in the previous year, including 30 for bodily harm [kn-online].
Particular attention was also paid to the climate activists who applied spray chalk to a naval ship. They were also sent off and temporarily arrested. Despite such incidents, the police reported an overall relaxed atmosphere among the festival-goers.
Everyone involved is looking forward to the rest of the Kiel Week with great excitement, which promises numerous highlights on land and on the water until June 29, 2025. The security precautions and the high level of police commitment seem to lay the foundation for a peaceful festival.
