Heating replacement in Lübeck: Save costs and become climate-friendly!

With an exciting event on the heating transition, the climate control center of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck invites you to the “Heating Exchange in Focus” event on September 18, 2025 at 5 p.m. The tour of an open construction site at Geverdesstrasse 32 represents an interesting introduction to the world of modern heating replacement. Here, participants can get to know the many advantages of new heating systems that are both efficient and cost-saving, as hl-live.de reports.

Following the site visit, specialist lectures will be offered in the St. Matthäi community room, Westhoffstrasse 80. The focus is on important topics such as the new Building Energy Act (GEG), which comes into force on January 1, 2024 and sets new standards for heating systems. From this date, only heating systems that use at least 65 percent renewable energy may be installed in new buildings within new development areas, as the federal government explains on its website bundesregierung.de. This regulation is a crucial step in driving forward the switch to climate-friendly heating.

What can visitors expect?

The event not only offers information about new technologies such as heat pumps and solar systems, but also valuable tips on the economical use of existing heating systems and information about funding programs. The Schleswig-Holstein consumer advice center will guide the participants through the various offers. Homeowners can find out how they can benefit from the maximum subsidy of 70 percent that is available for heating replacement, as well as other energy-related renovation measures, such as insulation or installing new windows, the government website explains. There are subsidies and advice available here that cover up to 50 percent of the consultation costs, which is particularly beneficial for homeowners.

In order to take part in the event, early registration is required. Anyone interested can register by email at klimaschutz@luebeck.de or by phone at (0451) 122-3934. Places are limited, so be quick!

The background: The Building Energy Act

The reform of the heating market initiated by the GEG is a central issue in German energy policy. Around three quarters of the heating systems in Germany currently run on fossil gas or oil. Therefore, the gradual replacement of these systems is essential in order to achieve climate goals and at the same time reduce dependence on fossil fuels, as tagesschau.de reports. All new heating systems must switch to renewable energy by mid-2028. Longer transition periods apply to many existing buildings. Municipalities are required to clearly define by the set deadlines where climate-neutral heat or gas networks will be expanded.

With these measures, the federal government not only wants to implement environmental policy goals, but also set incentives to stimulate the market for heating modernization. A plan that is still controversial among the public and among politicians, as the debate surrounding the heating law shows. After all, the new regulation offers the possibility of making up to 35 percent of the investment costs eligible for funding in order to provide financial support for switching to modern heating systems.

Overall, the event in Lübeck on September 18 promises an exciting and informative afternoon for everyone who is interested in the future of heating and would like to find out about the latest technologies and funding opportunities.
