Neumünster is investing 68 million euros in new school buildings and renovations!

There is a lot of investment in education in Neumünster: the city is planning a total investment of around 68 million euros in seven schools. This was presented in a comprehensive project that includes not only new buildings but also renovations. The focus is, among other things, on the Hans Böckler School (HBS), where an extension is currently being built. The existing school site was once built on a former airfield site that is still struggling with the legacy of the Second World War - the dangers of unexploded bombs should not be underestimated here. Despite these challenges, the shell construction of the two-story extension with an area of around 2000 square meters is already progressing.

The extension, which already houses some essential rooms for music, art, science and IT, will not only expand the existing pavilion classrooms, but also create additional specialist and group rooms. A particularly important innovation is barrier-free access, which is made accessible to all students. In addition, the extension will be connected to the district heating network and will have a green flat roof with a photovoltaic system, which will modernize the school not only ecologically but also energetically.

Renovation and monument protection

While the new construction of the Hans Böckler School is in full swing, the old building will also be extensively renovated. These renovation measures are estimated to cost 4.2 million euros and are intended to make the school fit for the future. The connection to the Wilhelm Tanck School (WTS) is particularly exciting, where a new building that is also planned will be linked to the old building from 1912. 19.61 million euros will flow into the city's largest school construction project, taking into account the requirements of monument protection. The Lower Monument Protection Authority of Neumünster is already actively involved in the planning process to ensure that all historical aspects are preserved. The authority offers extensive information and provides the necessary regulatory framework conditions that must be carefully observed when building work on listed properties.

Extensive projects in the region

The investments in school modernization not only affect Neumünster, but are part of overarching funding in Schleswig-Holstein. A total of 111.25 million euros will be made available nationwide for the construction and renovation of school buildings. Other projects in Neumünster should also be considered in this context. The Rudolf Tonner School will receive 12.61 million euros for a comprehensive renovation, while the Freiherr vom Stein School will receive 10.53 million euros with a new sports hall. The Klaus Groth School will be expanded by 9.58 million euros, and the Elly Heuss Knapp School and the Johann Hinrich Fehrs School will also benefit from cafeteria expansions.

With these measures, the city ensures that the educational infrastructure meets current and future requirements. It seems as if Neumünster has a good knack for securing the future of its schools and is thus sending an important signal for the appreciation of education in the region.
