The spectacular world of the Bad Bramstedter Moor is highlighted in the current edition of the NDR program “Nordtour”. On Saturday, September 13th, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., and on Sunday, September 14th, 2025, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:45 a.m., the focus will be on discovering the beautiful sides of Northern Germany. A special highlight of the program is the tour of the historic moor railway, which delves deep into the history of the region and tells some exciting stories. NDR reports that...

The Bad Bramstedter Moorbahn, which operated from 1930 to 1977, was originally intended to transport fresh moor to the rheumatism clinic. With a route length of almost two kilometers, it was operated with a narrow gauge of 600 mm and was an important means of transport for the region. The train even crossed a siding of the AKN railway on a swing bridge. After it was demolished, part of the tracks were preserved and are now used by the Oskar-Alexander-Kurbahn as a museum railway. The whole thing is based on a voluntary initiative that is committed to preserving this unique cultural asset. Wikipedia informs that...

A journey through history

The moor railway has a remarkable history behind it: at its peak, it transported up to 20 m³ of fresh moor daily using tipping lorries. The rheumatism sanatorium, which was founded in 1929, not only served as a place to relieve rheumatic complaints, but also as a location for the railway, which in its heyday ran with up to four diesel locomotives. Business models and operations were continually adapted to meet the needs of the sanatorium. Ultimately, rail operations were stopped in June 1977 with one last round trip and the tracks were dismantled. Moorbahn.de further describes...

The museum railway, which is named after the first director of the rheumatism clinic, Oskar Alexander, is very popular today. Guided tours and trips through the moor allow visitors to experience nature in a very special way. At the same time, projects to preserve the moor are supported in collaboration with local nature conservation authorities. In recent years, such initiatives have become more prominent as awareness of the need to conserve such valuable habitats grows.

Culture and cuisine in the region

But the “Northern Tour” has even more to offer! In addition to the moor railway, the tree houses in Borstel, run by Silvia and Hans Maassen, are also presented. Spending the night in the trees promises a special experience eight meters high, with amenities such as a whirlpool and sauna. Culinary highlights are also not neglected, such as the restaurant in the former waterworks in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg, which is an attractive destination for recreational athletes.

In summary, the upcoming “Northern Tour” not only offers a look into the history of the Bad Bramstedter Moorbahn, but also into the culture and beauty of the surrounding area. Offering trips and guided tours through the moor is an excellent way to discover the diversity of northern Germany and learn something about its history at the same time. Don't miss the show to enjoy these unique insights and learn more about this fascinating region!
