Record number of visitors at the open day in the Kiel state parliament!
July 13, 2025 was a very special day in the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament in Kiel. This Sunday, around 25,000 visitors streamed into the state house, a new visitor record that significantly exceeded the 20,000 guests from the last event in 2019. This reported NDR and thereby secured the title of a real celebration of democracy, as Parliament President Kristina Herbst aptly described it. Under the motto “Politics is not a pony farm,” citizens were introduced to the work of the state parliament and offered a variety of activities that encouraged active participation.
The event was not only an information platform, but also an opportunity for personal exchange with politicians. The plenary hall in particular, which was heavily frequented, offered the audience exciting lectures and activities. Visitors showed great interest in getting to know Parliament and its processes. The office of the President of the State Parliament was also open to guests, and live bands, a poetry slam as well as fire brigade and club presentations created a festive atmosphere in front of the State House.
Attractions for young and old
The little guests didn't miss out either: ponies from the Arche Warder were one of the children's most popular attractions. Parents and children were able to take part in exciting activities such as climbing and even take selfies with Prime Minister Daniel Günther. DJs, e-sports activities and exciting virtual reality games awaited visitors in the underground car park. This all contributed to making the open day an unforgettable experience that received a lot of enthusiastic feedback.
Prime Minister Günther emphasized the importance of democracy, exchange and discussion. The event was not only a showcase for the work of the parliamentary groups, administration and associations, but also a step towards greater citizen participation. As well as political-education.de notes, many citizens are showing a growing interest in political participation and discussion. The possibilities and limits of citizen participation are also regularly on the agenda.
Nowadays it is more important than ever that citizens are actively involved in the political process. New participation formats, such as eParticipation, can help bridge the gap between citizens and political institutions. Satisfaction with the presentation of political topics and critical questions is an essential basis for strengthening trust in democracy. Events like the open day in the state parliament are a good start to let us know this.
