Kührener Bridge ready for refugees: Demand drops surprisingly!
Today a new chapter for accommodation for refugees was opened in the Kührener Brücke. How kn-online.de According to reports, up to 45 refugees can be accommodated here, but there is currently a lack of allocations. The Preetz-Land office has extensively converted the former Catholic youth center of the Archdiocese of Hamburg into accommodation. The preparations are almost completely completed, but the rooms are still unused because the refugees are missing.
The private housing supply remains very tight. In January 2023, the former Hotel Landhaus Schellhorn was purchased, where 51 people have currently found accommodation. In addition, 71 refugees live in apartments and seven refugees live in the adjacent building of the Kührener Bridge. The head of the office, Peter Krebs, highlights that the demand for accommodation in 2022 was much higher than it is currently. “We are only expecting 20 new refugees this year,” continued Krebs.
The main building of the Kührener Bridge was completely renovated in 2013. With bright rooms equipped with single and bunk beds and well-maintained sanitary facilities, the accommodation is fully prepared. The former commercial kitchen needs some adjustments, but the conditions are in place for it to be taken up quickly.
Integration and perspectives
The challenge of finding your way in a new country is not getting any easier for many refugees. As the UN refugee agency shows, many are unfamiliar with the culture and processes and also have to deal with the German language. Unaccompanied minor refugees are often particularly affected and require special support.
It is important that society takes these fears and concerns seriously and that both information and participation are part of the integration process. This is the only way refugees can give back what they need for their integration - that is the key to positive social and economic change in the community.
On the other hand, there are also examples, such as in Oberursel, where new accommodation for 400-500 refugees was opened. The first 80 residents have already moved in here, and the city has taken far-reaching measures for integration, such as providing social workers and a 24-hour security service. Bürgersteiniterviews and close cooperation with the city administration show the successful path that many municipalities have to overcome the challenges of accommodating refugees while ensuring their safety, as fr.de also reports.
The Kührener Bridge is ready for the integration of new refugees. But without allocations, this process stagnates. The Preetz-Land Office intends to continue to provide relief to the private market in order to meet the needs of those who hope for safe and dignified accommodation.
