Increase in EHEC cases in SH: Worrying situation!

On September 11, 2025, the situation surrounding dementia, EHEC infections and the infrastructure in Schleswig-Holstein attracted more public attention than ever. The developments show that there is an urgent need for action, both in the health system and in transport policy.

A central theme is this Dementia plan in Schleswig-Holstein, which was decided over a decade ago. More than 70,000 people in the region now suffer from dementia and the number is increasing. Despite the implementation of 71 of the originally 80 planned measures, criticism of the lack of prevention offers and contact persons has become loud. Social Affairs Minister Aminata Touré plans to regularly revise the plan to better respond to the needs of those affected.

Construction progress and traffic problems

Another hot topic is this Schleibrücke Lindaunis, which is known to have been blocked for years. To ensure that traffic flows again soon, the new folding bridge is planned to be completed by the end of 2027. Nevertheless, there are delays and increasing costs to complain about, which inevitably put a strain on the project.

At the moment we also have to deal with other topics. That's how it is Raccoon population increased dramatically in the Stormarn district. From April 2024 to March 2025, 333 kills were counted, compared to 175 the year before. It almost seems as if the hunting of this species can no longer be stopped.

Health warning signs

What is particularly alarming is the increasing number of EHEC infections, which were currently registered in Schleswig-Holstein in September 2025. Almost 20 cases have been reported so far. Health experts point out that the risk of infection increases in the warmer months, but it is not a cause for concern at the moment. EHEC, also known as enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, can cause serious intestinal diseases and is particularly dangerous for children.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, for example, where the number of EHEC cases is also increasing, children are primarily affected. Several small patients are treated here in intensive care units. The eerie similarity between the current outbreaks in Germany and Belgium reminds many of the EHEC crisis of 2011, which resulted in several deaths. In order to determine the source of the infection, surveys of those affected are already underway.

The jurisdiction of the Robert Koch Institute shows that hygiene and care are essential when handling food. The bacteria are mainly found in raw meat and contaminated food. Particular caution is recommended: raw foods should be cooked well and fruits and vegetables should be washed thoroughly.

Outlook on health policy

The ongoing developments surrounding the Clinic closures In Schleswig-Holstein, concerns about medical care in the country are increasing. Pain doctors warn of potential closures that could affect up to 40% of clinics. Health Minister Kerstin von der Decken is strongly committed to pain medicine and will hopefully be able to overcome some of the challenges ahead.

In short, there is a lot to do in Schleswig-Holstein. Developments in areas such as health and infrastructure are crucial for the well-being of the people in the region. It remains to be seen how quickly those responsible will react to the alarming signals.
