In the coming weeks, the decommissioned frigate “Karlsruhe” off Flensburg will be the scene of exciting tests by the Bundeswehr. This measure aims to collect valuable knowledge for the construction of future naval ships when mines and explosive devices are detonated and to increase safety for the crews. How NDR reports, the Flensburger Schiffbau Gesellschaft (FSG) has already started work on the frigate, which will be used for material tests until 2028.

The focus is on recording the effects of detonations on the ship's outer shell, for which special sensors and recording devices are installed. Future tests will also include so-called “crash test dummies,” which are equipped with fine sensor technology to simulate the effects of explosive force on people. This approach is intended to provide valuable data to optimize ship designs, which will ultimately improve crew welfare. The plans call for two blasts by November 4, 2024 at the latest, with further annual tests until 2028, such as Defense Network supplemented.

Environmental protection in focus

Extensive preparations and approvals are necessary before the planned explosions. The authority has contacted the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of the Environment to ensure that environmental and nature conservation measures are taken into account. Particular attention is paid to minimizing the impact on the marine environment, as confirmed by the Federation for Nature Conservation (BfN). A double bubble curtain will be used to mitigate the pressure wave of the detonations and thus reduce the range of the effects. In addition, acoustic and optical monitoring is carried out, supported by several ships, to protect the underwater and animal world.

These tests represent a significant step in research and development in the maritime context. As the Fraunhofer FKIE emphasizes in its work priorities, secure maritime systems and infrastructures are of enormous importance for both military and civil applications. Changes in digitalization and networking require adapted security concepts, which should be integrated into future productive systems.

A look into the future shows that unmanned platforms will become increasingly important in the areas of technology and military applications. Their use ranges from detecting and clearing mines to mapping the seabed and exploring deposits. The development of new technologies, such as those addressed in the Fraunhofer FKIE research projects, could help create resource-optimized mission planning and safe navigation systems.

With these groundbreaking tests, the Bundeswehr hopes to not only improve the safety of its naval ships, but also to gain valuable insights for sustainable development in the maritime sector.
