Scandal in Bad Oldesloe: Family suffers from extreme mold infestation!
In Bad Oldesloe, the situation surrounding the apartments in the Hölk high-rise buildings is tense, especially for Abigail Agyeman (36) and her three children. Aggressive black mold has spread in her 50 square meter apartment while she herself is suffering from cancer. This health-damaging situation has attracted the attention of social organizations and city politicians. Social worker Jakob Wendebourg from the Plan B neighborhood project supports Agyeman and has started a petition to get the city of Bad Oldesloe to take action so that the Housing Protection Act can finally be applied. But the majority of city councilors have spoken out against this law, which is leading to a great lack of understanding among the population. Political figures, such as city politician Hannah Hofmann (Greens) and Social Affairs Minister Aminata Touré (Greens), have already announced their visits to get an idea of the situation, which at least creates some hope.
A building expert has now inspected Agyeman's apartment and prepared a report that examines the cause of the mold infestation. According to the results, the walls are extremely humid, especially near the ground. Several factors accelerate mold growth, including inadequate ventilation, over-furnishing and a large number of residents in the apartment. In addition, “on-site moisture” is identified as a key cause that can be attributed to the construction of the buildings themselves. Even with optimal heating and ventilation, mold formation could not have been prevented. Wendebourg suspects that the cold from a parking garage below the apartment is contributing to the high level of moisture, which is further exacerbating the situation.
Landlord under criticism
The conditions caused frustration: The landlord, Daniel Lietmeyer, promised to renovate the apartment as a gesture of goodwill, but blames Agyeman solely for the mold infestation. It remains unclear when the renovation can begin and when Agyeman can move. Hopes of a timely move are fading as Wendebourg shouts that it would be essential for Agyeman to find a new apartment outside of the Hölk high-rises.
But it's not just in Bad Oldesloe that there are concerns about the health of tenants. In Germany, the problem of mold infestation in apartments is being intensively debated. According to information from the Federal Environment Agency There are close connections between mold and health problems, especially respiratory diseases. Mold is a health risk that should not be underestimated. There are recommendations for prevention that include proper heating and ventilation as well as appropriate thermal insulation measures to minimize the risk of mold infestation.
Prevention is crucial to prevent cases similar to Agyeman's from occurring. A structurally intact building without penetrating moisture is a basic requirement for this. Anyone who is confronted with a mold infestation should not hesitate to seek help in good time.
In these difficult times it becomes clear that support from social workers and raising political awareness are indispensable. The fate of Abigail Agyeman and many other affected tenants is an urgent call for everyone involved to take the situation seriously and finally take action to prevent future mold problems.
