Summer Low German highlights: theater, shanties and casting!
The Oldesloer Bühne has put together an exciting program for the summer of 2025. On June 28th, the theater workshop in Beer-Yaacov-Weg invites you to “Low German at Market Time” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Heike Gräpel, the chairwoman of the stage, encourages everyone interested to talk and listen in Low German. This initiative is part of a broader effort to keep the Low German language alive, even in adapted formats such as church services and events offered for Low German lovers throughout Germany, see also the announcements on plattdeutschforum.de.
After you have visited “Low German at Market Time”, you can enjoy the maritime evening with the Oldesloer Shanty Choir and the Hai-O-Peis on the same day at 7 p.m. Well-known songs such as “Love is beautiful in the harbor” are on the program, while the sketch group provides additional entertainment. On June 29th between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. there will also be an open casting for everyone who would like to become active on, in front of or behind the stage. The castings so far have been a complete success and many new club members have been added.
Theater performance and ticket information
A highlight of this year's events will be the premiere of the play “The Sorcerer's Apprentice” on July 5th. The Oldesloer Stage Gnomes stage the story of George, who attends a magic school while struggling with a lack of interest in learning and causing chaos. The performances will take place on July 5th, 6th, 12th, 13th and 20th at 4 p.m., and also on July 19th at 3 p.m.
The tickets are already available at advance sales points such as Pareibo, Mirus Augenoptik in Bad Oldesloe, via Eventim or at the box office - for 12 euros in advance and 15 euros at the door. Anyone who would like to chat or take part in the casting can just stop by.
Low German Weeks 2025
Low German culture is also being promoted in the region through the upcoming Low German Weeks, which attracted many visitors last year. The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Homeland Association draws a positive conclusion from the last few weeks and plans to continue to offer an extensive program in 2025, which includes, among other things, theater performances, readings and church services, all of which take place in Low German. The event list is below heimatverband-mv.de published.
The importance of Low German is increasingly recognized, not only in cultural circles, but also in schools, where attempts are made to familiarize children with the language from an early age. Such initiatives show the great commitment to the Low German language and culture, which is particularly important today.
With a colorful program of theater, music and language events, there is something for everyone. Stay tuned and support the cultural activities in your region!
