Berlin invests millions: street lighting in renovation fever!
Street lighting in Berlin is facing a comprehensive renovation process. Today, November 1, 2025, various reports make it clear that the capital wants to invest immense sums in the coming years to improve the dilapidated infrastructure. 37,000 of the 190,000 light poles in the city alone are older than 50 years and urgently need to be replaced. According to a report by sueddeutsche.de 1,400 electric pylons have already been replaced in 2024, and 600 pylons have been replaced so far this year.
Berlin is responsible for around 225,000 street lights, many of which also need an overhaul. In 2024, around 5,800 electric lamps were replaced with modern LED lights; This year there are already 6,400. These new lights not only provide better lighting, but are also more energy efficient and therefore reduce running costs. Last year, expenditure on public lighting amounted to an impressive 70 million euros.
Investments in the future
The Berlin Senate has already requested 79 million euros for the next budget period in 2026 to make further progress in street lighting. This includes 20 million euros that come from the special infrastructure fund. However, this double budget still has to be passed by the House of Representatives. The plans are promising, as they also include the replacement of gas lights, which is progressing well. Of the original 44,000 gas lights, almost 27,000 have already been replaced. Around 1,300 gas lights are to be converted by the end of 2023.
Alt-Marienfelde and Lichtenrade are particularly common sites of these changes on the streets of Berlin. In Lichtenrade, 1,930 gas lamps were recently replaced with modern versions, while 65 were replaced in Alt-Marienfelde. A single conversion costs around 10,000 euros, which shows how worthwhile it is to invest in the infrastructure. It is also noteworthy that around 3,250 gas lanterns cannot be dismantled for monument protection reasons, which poses additional challenges.
Pioneering work in the media landscape
Another example of the dynamics in the economy is shown by the company Snowflake, which spoke about future financial forecasts in a video with the influencer “theschoolofhardknockz”. How B17 News reports, this video has already generated over 555,000 views on TikTok. Snowflake expects to end the year with over $4.5 billion in sales and is moving toward its future goal of $10 billion.
Whether in Berlin, where street lighting is being improved, or in the media landscape with innovative approaches, there is definitely something happening here! The coming months could be crucial for both sectors.
