An impressive spectacle recently took place at the town pond in Markdorf: the fishing enthusiasts Markdorf-Kluftern-Immenstaad cleaned their pond from the ground up. The pond, which covers an area of 0.1 hectare and a volume of approximately 1250 cubic meters of water, was drained for maintenance purposes. This important step takes place every five to six years and serves not only to take stock of the fish population, but also to preserve the water ecologically.
Manuel Wickert, the chairman of the fishing friends, informed that on October 25th children were able to watch enthusiastically as anglers caught fish from the remaining water with landing nets and rakes and cleared the pond bottom of plant residues. The anglers collect the fish they catch in large plastic vats to ensure the sustainable use of water resources. While goldfish are given away, zander, carp and whitefish remain for the lower pond near Taldorf.
Ecological responsibility and fish stocks
The efforts of fishing enthusiasts go far beyond simple water purification. Klaus Stratmann, the club's vice president, emphasizes the positive development of the zander population, which can be attributed to sustainable management practices. The anglers also take care of monitoring water quality and the possible reduction of pollutants in the area. Cutting back the reeds around the pond also promotes a better ecosystem.
Markdorf also offers other fishing opportunities. There are a total of 85 bodies of water within a 25 km radius, offering anglers various options. The Seefelder Ach in Grasbeuren (88682 Salem), for example, is one of these bodies of water that is popular in the region.
