In the waves of Huntington Beach, California, the highly anticipated “Incredible Dog Challenge” took place on Friday, June 20, 2025. Here dogs of various breeds, from Corgis to Labradors, competed against each other in a dazzling surfing competition. One of the standout participants was Faith, a 13-year-old, deaf and partially blind American Pit Bull Terrier. Despite her limitations, she showed exceptional bravery, boldly surfing the waves as her owner James Will watched her with pride. The competition highlights
The dogs, ages 2 to 13, showed off their surfing skills with the goal of securing a place in K9 surfing history. In the small dog category, Petey, a West Highland White Terrier who claimed last year's champion, triumphed. Coach Kay DeLoach praised his ability to maintain balance on the board. The judging in the competition was based on the height of the wave, the duration of the ride and small tricks that the dogs showed while surfing.
Pet owners didn't know where to look first. In addition to Petey, other dogs showed off their skills, including Charlie, a similar Labrador who was equally impressive on the water. The 11-year-old terrier Carson also fished a wave out of the water and brought astonished faces to the beach. Rosie, a Labrador from Santa Cruz, also made a grand entrance and surfed enthusiastically in front of Charlie and the other dogs.
A sea of possibilities
However, the “Incredible Dog Challenge” is not just about surfing enthusiasm. It also includes disciplines such as hurdles, slalom racing, stick catching and long jump. The participants, whether human or animal, are in friendly competition. Trainer Kristina Welsh aptly noted her Labrador Koa's enthusiasm for the ocean and compared it to children in the Southern California lifestyle - both seem to really enjoy playing in the water.
