A dramatic incident occurred on Monday on Autobahn 81 between Sulz am Neckar and Empfingen when a truck burst into flames. The tractor-trailer, which was traveling from Stuttgart towards Singen, swerved, hit the guardrail, overturned and caught fire. Thanks to the driver's quick actions, he was able to get to safety and fortunately only suffered minor injuries.
The course locations were completely closed for several hours, which led to considerable traffic chaos. The ADAC reported a traffic jam of up to five kilometers in both directions, which meant a wait of at least an hour for many drivers. Several surrounding fire departments were on site with a large contingent to extinguish the fire and bring the situation under control. A large-scale cordon was set up around the danger zone and diversion routes were decided.
Hazardous substance toluene in focus
What was particularly concerning about this incident was the contents of the truck. The truck was carrying toluene, a flammable organic solvent that posed additional hazards if spilled. At 5:15 p.m., the NINA warning app issued danger information informing the population in the affected regions around Mühlheim. Residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed and to switch off ventilation systems within a radius of up to 10 kilometers.
The dangers posed by the transport of such dangerous goods should not be underestimated. The number of truck fires on highways has increased significantly in recent years, not least due to increasing freight traffic and various risk factors. Technical defects, such as overheated brakes or defective tires, as well as improper loading are common causes of these fires.
