Linus Kutz: Farewell to THW Kiel and the next challenge awaits!

Today was a bittersweet day for the handball fans in Kiel: Linus Kutz said goodbye as a THW Kiel player after the last home game of the Handball Bundesliga. The talented player made a name for himself during his time at THW and was the top goalscorer in the German junior team during the 2024/25 season. Before his upcoming move to VfL Eintracht Hagen in the 2nd division, he is currently playing for the German national team at the Junior World Cup.

Kutz, who came to Kiel from AMTV Hamburg at the age of 14 and came through all the youth teams, scored 19 goals in 40 games for THW this season and gained valuable experience in the Bundesliga, the cup and the European League. “I have learned a lot and am happy to be able to help,” said Kutz during his moving farewell. He emphasized the importance of team spirit and the positive feedback that motivated him throughout his young career. He was also allowed to make his mistakes, which allowed him to mature further.

A look back at Kutz’s career

Linus Kutz made his Bundesliga debut on September 12, 2024 against Göppingen and has since played in the highest leagues of handball. He is particularly proud of his successes with the youth national team: He was part of the team that won the gold medal at the European Olympic Youth Festival in 2022 and also developed further in the A-youth by winning the DHB Cup.

His negotiating skills for the coming season are promising. Kutz has a second game right for the third division team TSV Altenholz and would like to push his development even further. THW managing director Viktor Szilagyi expressed the hope of seeing Kutz in the THW jersey again one day - a sign that his talent is very popular in the handball scene.

Handball in Germany

One reason for Kutz’s success is the strong German handball. Germany has a long history in handball, with three world championships (1938, 1978 and 2007) under its belt. The German Handball Association (DHB), one of the largest sports associations in the world, currently has over 765,000 members and the popularity of this sport is also reflected in the almost 90,000 sports clubs with around 28 million members in Germany.

In the 2022/2023 season, THW Kiel played in a league that attracted over 1.6 million viewers. With a record attendance of over 10,159 fans per game on average, the THW leads the all-time table of the handball Bundesliga and is therefore a flagship for the sport. It's no wonder that young talents like Kutz want to gain a foothold in this Bundesliga and start great careers.

Linus Kutz's path at THW Kiel is now over, but the hope of seeing him on the big stage again soon remains. “Goodbye and goodbye, Linus!”, you could say with a wink. Will Kutz ever return? Time will tell, but his similarities to the great heroes of handball are obvious.
