Workshop of the Heidelberg Fire Department: Focus on the future of training!

The training workshop of the district training team of the Heidelberg fire department took place on September 9, 2025, which focused on numerous aspects of fire department training. Aimed at the volunteer fire department, the participants dealt with cooperation in the training team, the development of courses as well as the strengths and potential for improvement in the current training situation. How Heidelberg reports, city fire chief Alexander Stadler gave a keynote speech that motivated those present to face the challenges of modern fire service practice.

The participants formed three working groups that dealt with the organizational framework of the courses, the theoretical content and the practical training. The results of these groups were presented in a subsequent discussion session, and the conclusion of the workshop was clear: good training is very important and must go hand in hand with the latest technology. Operations can only be managed efficiently if modern equipment is handled safely.

The basics of fire service training

Training in the fire department is fundamental for all active members. According to the definition on Wikipedia Fire service training is not only a basis of knowledge, but also a response to technological developments and the increasing demands caused by natural disasters or increased traffic volumes. Legal regulations regarding the employment and training of firefighters have been in force since the 19th century, and training has changed significantly over the years.

In order to participate in operations, a successful test in squad training is required. This training is divided into two parts: The first part lasts 70 hours and covers basic activities such as legal principles, burning and extinguishing, technical assistance and much more. Troop man training is often carried out at community level, for example in cities like Albstadt, where the participants receive the necessary tools for the operation, as in Albstadt fire department is explained.

A look into the future of training

The need for ongoing training is also underlined by the 'Feuerwehrensache' project, which aimed to modernize volunteer fire brigade training in North Rhine-Westphalia between 2012 and 2017. The aim was to change to a competence and action-oriented knowledge transfer in order to meet the demands of modern firefighters.

A variety of courses offered in state fire brigade schools ensure that firefighters are trained in specific skills. From breathing apparatus training to courses for radio operators and leadership training, a wide range is offered that enables fire department members to receive regular training and thus be up to the challenge that service to people brings with it.

Overall, it shows that modern training that is continually evolving is the key to success for the Heidelberg Volunteer Fire Department and beyond. And to put it in the words of those responsible at the workshop: “Commitment and further training are the foundation for a strong future for our fire department.” A big thank you to all the trainers who work tirelessly to ensure the quality of training!
