MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg signs Latvian star Toms Skuja!
The basketball club MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg has brought a new playmaker on board: Toms Skuja, a 23-year-old Latvian national player, is moving from Rīgas Zeļļi to Germany. The contract with the talented point guard runs until 2027 and includes mutual exit options. In the future, Skuja will wear the number #5 in the Ludwigsburg jersey, who want to further strengthen their squad depth and prospects. The move was made after extensive medical examinations and use of the player's release clause, as reported by MHP RIESEN itself.
What does the young player have to offer? As an experienced professional, Skuja has been giving his best on the basketball floor since the 2017/2018 season. His positions include well-known clubs such as Valmiera, Fuenlabrada and Eivissa in the Spanish third division. In the two and a half seasons at Rīgas Zeļļi so far, he has made 61 appearances and was able to impress with an impressive 12 points, 5.5 assists and 1.2 steals. In Latvia, his club came third in the Optibet Latvian-Estonian Basketball League this season.
The challenge in Ludwigsburg
However, it is still unclear whether Skuja will make his debut in the top game against table leaders Mitteldeutscher BC on Sunday. Current injuries in the team make it necessary to get used to it quickly. The American Booker Coplin did not make the desired impression after an injury, while the fitness of the regular point guard Stef Smith is still questionable. This opens up the opportunity for Toms Skuja to quickly gain a foothold in the rotation, as the Stuttgarter Nachrichten report.
Skuja himself is enthusiastic about his move: “I’m looking forward to being part of the Ludwigsburg basketball family,” said the player. He would also like to thank Rīgas Zeļļi for their support during his development as a basketball player and person.
A look at Latvia's basketball future
Meanwhile, Latvia is looking forward to the 2025 European Basketball Championship, where the country will act as host together with other nations. The Latvian team achieved an excellent fifth place at the 2023 World Cup and also wants to impress at the European Championships in front of their home crowd in Riga. The team, led by stars like Kristaps Porziņģis and Dāvis Bertāns, has a good chance of reaching the round of 16, which will be no easy task in the strong Group A. The Tipico sports betting shows the impressive goals of the Latvian team, which plays between August 27th and September 14th.
Toms Skuja is not only a new player for Ludwigsburg, but also a potential key player for Latvia at the upcoming European Championships. The development of the young Latvian is being followed with excitement, both in Ludwigsburg and in his home country.
