Mannheim mobilizes: Parking violations are now detected by a scanning car!

Parking violations are by no means a new issue, but now there is a breath of fresh air from Mannheim. The city is the first municipality in Baden-Württemberg to use a so-called scanning car to punish parking violations more effectively. Loud daily news This pilot project will not only make traffic monitoring more efficient, but also increase safety on the roads. An exciting development in times when every space on the street counts.

The scanning vehicle is equipped with state-of-the-art cameras that are able to capture the license plates of parked cars. If illegal parking is detected along the way, data such as license plate number, location and time are recorded. But don't worry: the data protection regulations are strictly adhered to. Images of correctly parked vehicles are deleted immediately, while those of incorrectly parked cars are stored for the duration of the fine procedure. In addition, pedestrians who appear in the recordings are automatically pixelated. This enables the collected data to be handled in a legally secure and data protection-compliant manner Swabian.

Increasing efficiency through the use of technology

The scanning car is able to check up to 1,000 vehicles per hour, while a security service employee can only manage around 50 vehicles in the same time. “The project enables significant relief and increased efficiency for our emergency services,” explains Elke Zimmer, State Secretary in the Ministry of Transport. In Mannheim, primarily safety-related violations such as parking in fire department access roads or absolute parking bans are punished.

Baden-Württemberg was the first federal state to create a legal basis for the use of these scanning vehicles, which also shows that other municipalities are already interested: Waldshut-Tiengen plans to introduce a similar system in the first quarter of 2026, while Freiburg also wants to follow suit from April 2026.

But Mannheim is not alone on this technological journey. A scanning car has been in use in Heidelberg since September. Although it does not issue tickets, it does check parking tickets and residents' parking permits. A scanning vehicle that specifically focuses on bicycle paths has also been tested in Düsseldorf since August. Fines are also imposed for violations. These developments show that digitalization is also finding its way into the transport sector and is helping cities restore order on the streets.

Overall, this progressive approach represents a clear step into the future of traffic monitoring and could be an exemplary solution for other municipalities. The fact that penalties are now imposed more effectively and at the same time citizens' data is protected as best as possible is guaranteed to be well received.
