Young eagles crush Mannheim Düsseldorf: Start of the season with big victories!
The new season of the German Youth League (DNL) started last weekend, and the Düsseldorfer EG had to admit defeat twice against the Jungadler Mannheim. On an eventful Saturday and Sunday, the Düsseldorf team were unable to win either of their two games, which means a tough start to the new ice hockey year. Ice Hockey Magazine reports that Saturday's game ended 1:5, and just one day later the Düsseldorf team suffered an even more bitter 1:8.
Already in the first game, the Düsseldorf team noticed that they were inferior to the young eagles. Mannheim started strong, and Max Penkin scored the first goal in the 5th minute. Maik Mähler quickly doubled the lead before David Segeth made it 3-0 in the 17th minute. Düsseldorf had little to report in the first two thirds and was only able to reduce the score to 1:5 in the final period thanks to Lennox Bill in the 51st minute.
A dominant Sunday
Sunday brought no improvement for the people of Düsseldorf. Mannheim set the tone again and Leon Kreps scored two goals. In the 45th minute, Adrian Kuhn crowned the young eagles' performance with the next goal, while Denis Root scored the final point in the 53rd minute. Düsseldorf could only be dangerous sporadically and hardly took place in the first two thirds.
- Samstag: Düsseldorf 1 – 5 Mannheim
- Sonntag: Düsseldorf 1 – 8 Mannheim
The Jungadler Mannheim not only shine with their current performance, but are also one of the most successful teams in the DNL. Since its founding in 2000, the team has won 18 titles and is considered the benchmark in German U20 ice hockey. Especially in the years between 2002 and 2006, they won five championships in a row, which secured them a solid place in the annals of the sport. Home sport emphasizes that the young eagles advanced in the preliminary round last season and would now like to use their experience again.
Outlook for the coming season
The people of Düsseldorf now have time to rethink their strategy and prepare for the next challenges. The young polar bears start with a home game and next week they will meet the young sharks from Cologne, who won the main round last season. This will be an exciting duel that will put Düsseldorf's form to the test. The first game of the young polar bears will take place on September 16th and 17th in the Donau-Arena.
The DNL pursues the goal of offering German young players optimal training and support and preparing them for the jump into the professional leagues. Wikipedia explains that this league is the elite youth league for U20 players in Germany, which has grown steadily since its inception and has encouraged teams to develop further through good performances.
The Jungadler Mannheim made a strong statement right at the start of the season, and it remains to be seen how the remaining teams will react to the record champions' dominance. It is now important for the Düsseldorf team to learn the lessons from this weekend and approach the next games with new energy.
