NATO summit in Brussels: Strong measures against Russia planned!

Today in Brussels everything is focused on defense: NATO defense ministers met to discuss the ongoing airspace violations by Russian fighter jets and kamikaze drones. The current situation is explosive because security on the alliance's eastern flank is at great risk. According to [Schwarzwälder Bote](https://www.schwarzwaelder-bote.de/content.sicherheit-und- Defense-nato-beraet-nach-luftraumreinigung-ueber-bessere-abschreitung.68134959-7f94-49e1-a1b7-cf34486843c1.html) the ministers are discussing the Appropriateness of the current NATO deployment with the aim of militarily hindering Russia and countering provocative actions.

Some member states are pushing for an increased NATO presence in the eastern alliance area, and the role the EU can play in setting up a drone defense system is also being discussed. Financing issues are of course the focus of the discussions. Interestingly, another meeting of EU defense ministers is taking place on the same day, with 23 of the 32 NATO countries also being EU members.

The Ukraine Contact Group is taking shape

In parallel to these discussions, the Ukraine Contact Group is meeting on Wednesday afternoon, the fifth meeting since the start of the Russian war of aggression. The Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umjerow is expected under German and British leadership, who will report on the current situation at the front and urgently needed defense equipment. [Deutschlandfunk](https://www.deutschlandfunk.de/ukraine-kontaktgruppe-treff-sich-auf-us-luft Waffenstuetzpunkt-122.html) highlights that US Defense Secretary Austin praises Ukraine's progress in its counteroffensive and that deliveries of Abrams main battle tanks to Ukraine should take place in a timely manner.

As if that weren't enough, Germany is announcing an arms package worth 400 million euros. This package includes, among other things, explosive ammunition, mortar ammunition and mine rockets. The FDP and the Union are also calling for the rapid delivery of Taurus cruise missiles. FDP defense politician Strack-Zimmermann calls for negotiations to be approached from a position of strength.

Increased military cooperation

NATO launched the new “Eastern Sentry” mission in September to secure airspace on the eastern flank. Germany is taking part in protective flights over Poland with four Eurofighter fighter jets, while France, Great Britain, the Czech Republic and Denmark have also pledged their support. The operation was initiated after airspace violations by Russian drones and MiG-31 fighter jets occurred in Poland and Estonia.

These developments come as US President Donald Trump voices his displeasure with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin and his disappointment over the ongoing war. In an upcoming meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington, among other things, a delivery of Tomahawk cruise missiles will be requested. Süddeutsche Zeitung reports that Trump is not ruling out such a delivery, while the Kremlin is already warning that it could further escalate the situation.

What is happening around Ukraine and NATO remains exciting. International diplomats face major challenges, and the coming weeks will show whether diplomatic pressure and military support are sufficient to stabilize the situation.
