The impact was so violent that the first carriage of the light rail derailed and the situation on the tracks quickly deteriorated.
The course of the accident shows how quickly serious collisions can occur. After colliding with the light rail, the car ended up crashing into a parked vehicle. Fortunately, a large number of passengers on the light rail were uninjured, while the driver had to be taken to hospital with serious injuries. The 24-year-old light rail driver sustained minor injuries, which caused the situation to become stressful but not escalate dramatically.
Consequences of the accident
After the accident, the effects were clearly noticeable in Stuttgart-East. The fire department was deployed to put the derailed wagon back on the tracks, which resulted in both the road and the light rail line being closed for several hours. There was material damage of around 100,000 euros. Shipping on the tracks and motorized traffic in the area were paralyzed for the time being, and many commuters had to look for alternatives.
