Stuttgart is planning a new community school: More opportunities for students!
In Stuttgart, the former capital of the region, the Greens in the local council are planning a significant step to improve educational offerings. The school policy spokesman Fabian Reger has formulated a proposal to strengthen community schools (GMS), which has met with great interest. The application aims to examine the possibility of establishing another community school in Stuttgart, particularly in the Ost or Wangen districts. There are currently only eight community schools in the city, only one of which has a high school level.
The community school, which has existed in Baden-Württemberg since 2012, is enjoying increasing popularity. The supporters of the proposal would also like to convert one of the existing secondary schools into a community school in order to give this type of school a further boost. What is particularly important to the applicants is the development of a secondary school at an additional GMS, preferably in the Weilimdorf district. The need for such facilities is obvious, especially in view of the fact that currently only the Schickhardt Community School has an upper secondary school.
The way to the new school
An important element of the application is the planned change in the law, which will enable upper level associations of community schools with and without their own upper level. The administration was therefore commissioned to show how these associations can be implemented in a timely manner. The aim is to strengthen the numerous advantages of the community school, such as individual learning in heterogeneous groups, also when advising parents during the transition from primary school.
In order to further advance the initiative, a hearing on strengthening the community school is scheduled for before the 2026 summer break. Representatives from science and practice should be involved in order to develop well-founded approaches to the further development of community schools. These schools offer a wide range of qualifications depending on location and focus on a motivating learning environment.
A new concept for everyday school life
The community schools in Baden-Württemberg underline their concept with a balanced school day, which, in addition to cooperative and individual learning phases, also includes exercise and relaxation times. Students spend eight hours at school several days a week, which not only promotes learning but also creates space for lunch together. This makes family life more relaxed as many tasks can be completed on site.
In order to offer students a comprehensive learning environment, community schools cooperate all-day with various extracurricular partners such as clubs and organizations, which supports the educational framework and contributes to qualitative development. This creates a diverse and motivating learning opportunity that not only serves the academic development, but also the personal development of the students.
These developments in Stuttgart show how important it is to design educational institutions in a modern and future-oriented manner. A good education system is not only the responsibility of politicians, but also the cooperation of everyone in order to meet the demands of today and to prepare students for their future in the best possible way.
