St. Martin's Procession in Altötting: Festival of Lights with St. Martin and music!

The anticipation for the St. Martin's Day procession in Altötting-Süd is increasing. On Sunday, November 9th, a family service will take place at 9:30 a.m. in the south parish church of St. Josef, which will be accompanied musically by the children's and youth choir. A special highlight will be the blessing of the lanterns, which will be very well received by the young participants. In the afternoon, at 4:45 p.m., the St. Martin's Day procession begins in front of the Graminger Weißbräu.

At the center of the procession is Saint Martin, who became known as a Roman soldier. His merciful gesture of sharing his cloak with a beggar symbolizes the charity and hope that characterize this custom. Martin is often depicted on horseback, which should delight children. The parade is accompanied by the St. Georg shooting club, the folk costume club and the Unterkastler brass band, which create a festive atmosphere.

Experience tradition and community

The St. Martin's Day parade is much more than just a parade with lanterns. It is an expression of community and deeply rooted customs. Saint Martin shaped the tradition by dedicating his life to the service of the poor, which also works today as a practice of charity. The connection to the children during the service and the procession shows how important their active participation in the faith community is. The children's creativity and joy of movement enrich the festival and make it something special.

In connection with the preparations for the St. Martin's Day procession, the delicious customs surrounding St. Martin's pretzels and sweets also come to life. These delicacies are an integral part of the celebrations and are very popular with visitors young and old.

In view of the ongoing challenges that we know from the digital sector - be it the use of social networks or the often unreliable internet connection - the St. Martin's Procession remains a place of analogue joy and togetherness that brings us all together.

We cordially invite all Altötting residents, big and small, to celebrate this special day together and to experience the shining lanterns that will add sparkle to the streets. Preparations are in full swing and we can look forward to an atmospheric get-together.
