Terrible accident in Burgkirchen: 73-year-old dies after collision
A tragic accident occurred today in Burgkirchen an der Alz, shocking the community and beyond. On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, around 9:30 a.m., a 44-year-old man from the Altötting district hit a 73-year-old pedestrian head-on while driving a self-propelled wheel loader. The incident happened in the parking lot of a penny market on Jahnstrasse. Despite immediate resuscitation measures by the emergency services, the woman died at the scene of the accident, as the Bavaria Police reported.
The wheel loader driver apparently overlooked the pedestrian. The emergency services from the Altötting police station, who were immediately alerted, began the investigation, while the Burgkirchen volunteer fire department arrived with five vehicles and 15 emergency services to provide technical support and secure the scene of the accident. In coordination with the Traunstein public prosecutor's office, an accident analysis and technical report was also commissioned.
Growing concern about road safety
This incident joins a worrying series of traffic accidents in the region. Just recently, on Monday morning, an 81-year-old woman died in another traffic accident in the Burgkirchen community. Her Peugeot collided with a BMW belonging to a 70-year-old on State Road 2107. The exact circumstances of the collision are still unclear and an expert was called in to clarify the situation. In this case, too, the 81-year-old died from her injuries immediately after the accident, and the other person involved was taken to the InnKlinikum with minor injuries. Both vehicles were totaled and the material damage is estimated to be in the mid five-digit euro range, as the Passauer Neue Presse reports.
Police appealed for information from witnesses while the scene of the accident was closed for several hours in both cases. These tragic events increase the discussion about road safety and the need for measures to prevent such accidents. According to the Statistics of the Federal Statistical Office, the recording of traffic accidents is an essential basis for future traffic policy, safety measures and also for the design of the infrastructure.
The residents of Burgkirchen are visibly affected today. The events bring to the fore the question of how such accidents can be avoided in the future in order to strengthen citizens' sense of safety.
