Police officer in court: baton attack on underage demonstrators!

A current case is causing a stir in Aschaffenburg. A 55-year-old police officer is accused of injuring a 14-year-old minor with a baton during a demonstration event in the summer of 2023. The Franken citizens' initiative called for this peaceful gathering, during which around 40 participants blocked the street. How Primavera24 reported, the emergency services asked the demonstrators to clear the way and pushed them onto the sidewalk.

The 14-year-old, part of the group, then tried to get back onto the street. At this point, the defendant is said to have hit the minor, who was already standing on the sidewalk, in the stomach with the baton for no justifiable reason. The young man suffered abdominal injuries and was treated at the Aschaffenburg Alzenau Clinic. Now the police officer has to answer in court for dangerous bodily harm while in office.

International missteps

Similar incidents are also occurring in other cities, such as Zurich, where the city police used batons and irritant spray on March 8, 2025 during an unauthorized demonstration against the Italian oil company Eni. Although the emergency services generally acted correctly, an unfortunate situation arose here too. A police officer pushed down a banner and improperly handled his baton, leading to an internal investigation. Loud Daily Gazette There are personnel law consequences for the police officer in question in the room, but it does not look like criminal measures. No injuries to protesters were reported.

Similar allegations have been made in Frankfurt. After an anti-Nazi demonstration that took place at the end of May, “Schülis gegen Rechts Frankfurt” reported excessive police violence. Witnesses reported an aggressive mood on the part of the police and the unnecessary use of batons. The police rejected these allegations and emphasized that the use of batons took place after an argument between the demonstrators. Nevertheless, the officials announced an internal review of the operation, they said Frankfurter Neue Presse.

A mistake that cannot be ignored

These incidents raise questions about the appropriate use of force by police. While the operations in Aschaffenburg, Zurich and Frankfurt are being discussed, an alarming trend in the treatment of protesters is emerging, which is not only about compliance with regulations, but also about respect for the rights of citizens.

The case in Aschaffenburg will certainly not be the last to fuel this discussion. The public is asked to consider how much we want to protect those who are supposed to protect us.
