Augsburg is fighting for the 2040 Olympics: City council supports hot application!

The race to host the 2040 Olympics has now gained momentum. The cities of Munich, Berlin, Hamburg and the Rhine-Ruhr region have submitted their applications, with Munich particularly focusing on integrating Augsburg into its concept. Several sports facilities from the Fuggerstadt are taken into account, which significantly increases the chances of an application. Hello Augsburg reports that this idea is part of the “One Village Concept Munich+”, which includes the ice track and the WWK Arena in Augsburg.

The ice channel has been established as a historic venue for the canoe slalom since 1972, and the WWK Arena can accommodate over 30,000 spectators, making it an ideal location for the sporting events. Furthermore, the Erhard Wunderlich sports hall was named as a venue for boxing and indoor sports as well as the state performance center of the German Alpine Club for sport climbing. Mayor Eva Weber has already highlighted the importance of this application, particularly in terms of visibility, tourism and cultural diversity. Augsburger Allgemeine adds that the city has invested over 20 million euros in the canoe route on the ice channel in order to prepare for the 2022 Canoe Slalom World Championships.

Citizens' decision crucial for Olympic bid

The referendum in Munich, which is scheduled to take place on October 26, 2025, will decide whether the application remains with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). The Munich city council has already signaled its support, which is a positive sign for the application. The majority of citizens must vote in favor of hosting the Olympic Games in order to move the project forward. Despite this positive mood, there are also challenges because the competition never sleeps. Hamburg, Leipzig and Berlin also have strong interests in hosting the Olympics. City of Munich emphasizes that the city's past with rejected applications for the Winter Games (e.g. 2013 and 2011) should also be kept in mind.

The city government is open to the planning and emphasizes the need for broad support among the population. In addition, a concept for cost estimation is aimed for by May 2024 at the latest. The DOSB's final decision will depend on how the existing sports facilities are used and how new temporary halls and event areas can be integrated.

For Augsburg, a successful application could not only represent an opportunity from a sporting perspective, but also bring about economic improvement. The ice channel was recently renovated, and the city has long been interested in hosting canoe competitions. What happens next remains to be seen, but the next steps are clear: the referendum will be decisive for the future of the application.
