Bamberg is cleaning up: 400 citizens are making their contribution to environmental protection!
The city of Bamberg experienced a lively hustle and bustle on October 4, 2025, when Mayor Jonas Glüsenkamp and around 400 committed citizens, including many children from the St. Gisela kindergarten, became active in collecting garbage. This action took place as part of the World Cleanup Day took place and impressively illustrated the community's commitment to a clean environment.
Equipped with high-visibility vests, gloves and grippers, the little helpers set off and showed great enthusiasm for their project. A special highlight was the moment when a girl proudly presented Mayor Glüsenkamp with her filled bucket with finds such as bags of chips, iced tea and glass. The mayor used this opportunity to draw attention to the dangers of glass in the playground and to promote a sense of responsibility when dealing with nature.
Together for the environment
The participation in the campaign was impressive: two kindergartens, four schools and children from BasKIDhall took part and ensured that garbage was collected in many places in the city. Many unpleasant surprises were discovered in green areas and on paths, such as bulky waste, monitors, used grills and even an old license plate. In recent years the World Cleanup Day A large network has been formed and waste collection campaigns are now coordinated in over 190 countries.
The collected waste was sent to seven central collection points in Bamberg. While the water rescue service was active at the “bath wall”, the helpers only found two bicycle rims and a minimal amount of rubbish there. In total, the trash collected filled the back of a pickup truck, demonstrating the enormous amount of trash collected during the operation.
Global commitment to clean environments
The World Cleanup Day is not just a local event, but a significant UN day of action that has achieved great things in 2025 and in the years before. With over 70 million participants from more than 190 countries, the day is celebrated on September 20th and symbolizes the global commitment to a waste-free future. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the challenges of environmental pollution and encourages individuals to actively participate in eliminating waste.
Looking back at the origins of this globally significant campaign, it started in Estonia in 2008 with 50,000 participants. Over the last five years, over 70 million people have taken part in the campaigns. Even in crisis areas such as Afghanistan and Ukraine, people are committed to protecting their environment despite adverse circumstances. The World Cleanup Day This not only promotes environmental protection, but also the sense of togetherness and resilience of communities.
The campaign in Bamberg shows how important it is that each and every one of us does our part to keep things clean. We are definitely on the right track when it comes to getting even more people involved in environmental protection in the future.
