Panel discussion in Bamberg: European Army – reality or dream?

In a few days, on October 29, 2025, the Young European Federalists (JEF) Bamberg will invite you to an exciting panel discussion entitled “European Army – Vision or Illusion”. The event will take place at the Otto Friedrich University in Feldkirchenstrasse 21, room F21/03.84, from 7 p.m. The discussion will address burning questions about the future of European defense policy, in particular the feasibility of a common European army. This exchange is accessible free of charge to all interested visitors and press representatives.

The event brings together well-known guests, including Captain Dhany Sahm, a youth officer and speaker on security policy for the Bundeswehr. Andreas Schwarz, member of the Bundestag (SPD) and former member of the “Bundeswehr Special Funds” committee, will also contribute his perspectives. The second half of the panel discussion will feature an open discussion with guests - an ideal opportunity to exchange opinions on this important topic.

The context of the defense debate

The issue of a common European army is made particularly relevant by the recently published White Paper on European Defense, presented by the European Commission under the leadership of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The White Paper argues that the era of the peace dividend is over and Europe urgently needs to step up its defense efforts. It identifies a chronic lack of investment and inefficient spending dedicated to military capabilities. To address these challenges, the ReARM Europe plan includes comprehensive measures to improve defense capabilities in Member States.

A key aim of the White Paper is to close capability gaps and strengthen support for the European defense industry. Over 800 billion euros are to be made available to secure the necessary defense spending. It also emphasizes the importance of expanding the European internal market for defense and promoting innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum technology.

Future prospects and challenges

The debate around European defense aims to give member states additional financial leeway. Among other things, the activation of the national escape clause of the Stability and Growth Pact is intended to make it possible to increase defense spending. This topic will certainly come up during the panel discussion on October 29th and will illustrate how closely Europe's fate is linked to questions of collective security.

Anyone who is interested in the topic of European defense policy and the vision of a common army should not miss this opportunity. Everyone is invited to take part in the lively discussion and to help turn visions into concrete reality one day.
