Digital memories: 360° tour of the Dachau concentration camp memorial!

A particularly enriching event is coming up: On Monday, July 21, 2025, the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial invites you to a digital event where the new learning rooms will be presented. From 6:30 p.m. it's all about the 360° tour “Panorama of Memory”, which serves to prepare for the visit to the memorial and to reflect on it afterwards. The digital solution is a cooperation with the company Bestviews and is expected to come onto the market in 2024/2025.

This tour will feature 360° photographs of the outdoor area of the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial and offers interactive elements such as information points. These points informed visitors about the topics, places and reports from former prisoners. The event is aimed at interested parties, especially teachers, for whom lesson plans and worksheets are available.

Digital educational offerings in memorial sites

The project is part of a larger project called “Digital Memorial Education” and will be implemented from 2023 to 2026. In addition to the tour, the educational app is also available “DachauEdu” presented. This app not only supports the preparation and follow-up of the memorial visit, but was also developed with the help of a funding program from the State Office for Non-State Museums in Bavaria. It is intended for teachers, those active in education and young people aged 13 and over and offers digital exercises and materials to reflect on the visit.

The exercises include the first variant, “What Remains?”, which encourages individual and group-related reflection. More exercises will be gradually added to the app. What is practical is that the digital offerings are free, location-independent and user-friendly. “DachauEdu” is available as a mobile application for iOS and Android as well as a browser application and can also be used barrier-free using screen readers.

Innovative approaches in the culture of remembrance

What makes the whole thing particularly exciting is the novel design thinking approach that HPI students use. The focus here is not only on technical feasibility, but above all on the needs of future users. To achieve this goal, the students visited various memorial sites and spoke intensively with historians and employees of the education departments. The impressions and wishes of future visitors were recorded in order to design an online application that both arouses curiosity and integrates playful elements.

These innovative approaches to digital memorial work make it possible for the places of remembrance not only to be visited, but also to be kept alive through digital formats. They not only invite you to learn, but also to actively engage with history and promote understanding of the significance of the memorials.

Interested parties can register for the event until July 21, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. The Zoom link will be sent to participants by 6:00 p.m. on the day of the event. Since the event is not suitable for people under 13 years of age, care should be taken to adjust the target group accordingly.
