A very special moment for fans of the series “Dahoam is Dahoam”: The appearance of Jason Giuranna, the first deaf guest actor, adds a fascinating facet to the show. Giuranna, known as the presenter of the BR show “Seeing instead of hearing”, brings not only his personality but also sign language into the series. This premiere took place on November 3rd and 4th and is long overdue, as Giuranna highlights the lack of inclusion of deaf people on German television. The entire crew had prepared to change their usual procedures. Instead of chatting loudly, everything happened on set using sign language. Director Hannes Spring noted that this made the atmosphere calmer and more harmonious. For Giuranna himself, this appearance is a lifelong dream that he can now fulfill. He has experience in front of the camera, but the challenge of acting in a daily soap is new to him. In order to achieve this authentically, the other actors were also challenged - they learned sign language in order to really interact with Giuranna on an equal level.
A role model for the next generation
Again Colorful Giuranna reports that it is very important to motivate deaf children and show them that they can achieve their goals. He comes from a family that has been deaf for five generations and sees the need to make deaf people more visible in film and television. The moderator, who speaks not only German but also Italian sign language, urges that the perspectives of deaf people be integrated into the production process.
He hopes to be seen more often in series or films in the future and describes the film experience on “Dahoam is Dahoam” as enriching. Giuranna is convinced that different dialects also exist in sign language - a parallel to spoken language, which often still lacks recognition and visibility in the media landscape. His appearances in the daily soap could be the start of many more inclusive projects.
