Sticky fly catchers: Danger for bats in Erding! This is how we protect them!

In recent days, the region's tranquil nature has been overshadowed by a serious warning. The State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV) draws attention to the dangers of sticky flycatchers, which turn out to be a deadly trap, especially for local bats. The death of a lesser noctule, a strictly protected species of bat, made this particularly clear.

The poor noctule was found severely weakened and covered in glue. He was probably attracted by the sweet smell of the glue or the wriggling movements of the insects. Despite intensive attempts by helpers to free the bat with cooking oil and to bathe it with mild washing lotion, the help was in vain. The animal refused to eat and tragically died after two days.

The role of bats

Bats like the little noctule play an important role in the ecosystem because they are, above all, skilled hunters of insects. During the summer months they search intensively for food to provide for their young. During this time they are particularly vulnerable to capture by sticky flycatchers, which can often be used outdoors. The LBV therefore appeals to the population to refrain from using such traps in order to protect local wild animals.

Anyone who encounters an injured noctule or other bat should immediately contact the bat working group at LBV Erding. Evelyn Ertel is available for help on 0 81 22 39 61 or 01 74 7 82 10 80 and Brigitte Blume on 0 81 22 16 18 or 01 75 9 02 16 64.

Given the dangers posed by the inconspicuous sticky flycatchers, it is time to rethink your habits. Let's work together to ensure that our neighbors don't fall into traps at night!
