From now on, travelers can fly over the clouds in a new aircraft! Cathay Pacific officially launched the connection between Munich and Hong Kong on June 16, 2025. This was not only a big step for the airline, but also for Munich Airport, which further consolidates its role as an important hub between Europe and Asia. The flights are offered on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and last almost eleven hours.
Hong Kong, the vibrant metropolis with over seven million inhabitants, is not only a tourist destination, but also a central economic and financial location. The city is located on the southern coast of China, just 60 kilometers east of Macau. Previously, this direct connection only existed with Lufthansa, making the introduction of Cathay Pacific an attractive new beginning for travelers. The Airbus A350-900 will be used on this route and it is expected that this modern and fuel-efficient aircraft will satisfy many passengers.
Economic importance and connections
Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport, emphasizes how important the reconnection to Hong Kong is. “We have a good hand here when it comes to developing new routes,” says Lammers with a smile. Cathay Pacific will be the fourth Asian airline to fly to Munich Airport in the last three years. A total of eight Asian airlines are now represented in Munich, which gives the city additional economic impetus.
Hong Kong International Airport is renowned for its excellent connectivity, allowing travelers from Asia to easily travel to Europe and North America. Companies from Bavaria and the neighboring economic area, which can transport their goods directly to the Asian markets, now also benefit.
Ceremonial opening
To celebrate the new flight, the first travelers will be surprised with gingerbread hearts, creating a warm atmosphere. When it first landed in Munich, the aircraft was also welcomed with a traditional water baptism.
