Missing bather at Kronthaler Weiher: Shocking search ends lightly!
On Tuesday evening, June 25, 2025, readers in Erding witnessed a dramatic situation at the Kronthaler Weiher. Around 7:45 p.m., bathers reported that a 51-year-old man had not returned to his belongings for about 90 minutes. This led to a comprehensive search operation launched by the Erding water rescue service, the fire department and the police. A police helicopter supported the operation from the air and helped to quickly find the missing bather.
Luckily, during the search, the man returned to his place and said he had been out in the city. A total of 17 emergency services from the water rescue service, 15 from the fire department and several police patrols were actively involved at the scene, which shows how seriously the situation was taken when the report was received. But that wasn't the only incident in the region this weekend.
A narrow escape in the Finsinger Weiher
The day before, on Saturday, there was a dramatic incident in the Finsinger Weiher. A 20-year-old man battled drowning and went under. Bathers noticed the critical situation around 5:13 p.m. and immediately alerted the rescue workers. A brave bather jumped into the water, submerged the helpless man and brought him to the shore, where he was immediately revived by a member of the water rescue team.
Resuscitation included the administration of oxygen and the use of a defibrillator. Despite all efforts, the 20-year-old's condition remained critical, but his situation improved noticeably. The “Christoph 1” helicopter landed around 5:25 p.m. to bring the emergency medical team for further care. The young man was flown to a Munich clinic a short time later. It remains unclear why he sank, but it is suspected that he was not a safe swimmer.
Safety measures for bathers
Such incidents highlight the importance of preventive measures and first aid in the water. “Self-safety has priority,” advise the Maltese on their website. Careless rescue attempts can often be dangerous for the rescuer, as drowning people react in panic and cling to everything in their vicinity, including rescuers. To minimize the risk, rescue attempts should always be started from a fixed point, for example using lifebuoys or floatable objects.
In the event of a swimming accident, every second counts. Immediate ventilation of the affected person is possible even in shallow water and should be carried out as quickly as possible. After securing yourself on the bank, further first aid measures can then be initiated to ensure the survival of the drowning person. This impressively shows that knowledge and quick action can save lives in an emergency.
For anyone who wants to enjoy relaxing time by the water, it is good to be aware of the risks and know what measures to take in an emergency. So nothing stands in the way of bathing fun!
