Remembering the darkness: Hallbergmoos shows the Nazi era in the town hall
An interesting piece of history is presented in the Hallbergmoos community archive. Martina Paringer, who has been looking after the files in the archive since the end of 2018, has discovered remarkable documents and posters from the National Socialist era, which can be seen in an exhibition in the town hall foyer until the end of the year. This vividly shows the effects of totalitarianism and war on the everyday lives of people in Hallbergmoos South Germans reported.
Mayor Benjamin Henn emphasizes the importance of the exhibition: “This opportunity to remind people and pause is very important to us.” The exhibits date back to the late 1920s and give an idea of how National Socialism also took root in Hallbergmoos. Visitors can see, among other things, a referendum from 1929 in which only 12 residents out of around 1,200 took part.
Insights into the dark past
A particularly remarkable document shows the strict separation of Germans and Poles in an inn and a document that denigrates several people as “Gypsies”. “Children were accepted into the Hitler Youth and a local councilor had to resign from the NSDAP in 1936 due to alleged national unreliability,” Paringer continues. The difficulties of the post-war period are also discussed: After the end of the war, chaos and hardship reigned in Hallbergmoos, as reports to the US military government document. In 1946, the mayor even had to report a lack of helpers in agriculture.
The exhibition also highlights that many documents from the Nazi era were destroyed in other communities, but not in Hallbergmoos. Some posters were found in a fire department folder, which had used the blank backs for other purposes. It is fortunate that the documents have been preserved and were able to give parts of the population, such as the former concentration camp prisoners and Poles who sought refuge in Hallbergmoos in May 1945, a small insight into the time.
Special events surrounding the exhibition
The exhibition “National Socialism and the Second World War in Hallbergmoos and Goldach” can be seen in the town hall until the end of the year. Anyone who would like to find out more about the background can take part in free tours planned for September 19th, November 14th and December 16th. It is an excellent opportunity for everyone to engage with local history and relive the memories of the time.
With the discovery of these documents and the subsequent exhibition, Hallbergmoos shows that history does not have to be forgotten, but rather communicated. It invites all citizens to look at the past and learn from it - in the spirit of warning and pausing.
