Bayernliga season starts with only 17 teams: Why is that?

An exciting year for the Bayernliga is coming! The 2025/26 season starts on July 20, 2025 and brings with it some changes. In both relays – North and South – only 17 teams are taking part in the race this year. This is a little surprising, as there are normally 18 teams per season, reducing the minimum number to 36. The Bavarian Football Association (BFV) has already explained why this reduction occurred and it remains to be seen how clubs, such as SpVgg Bayern Hof and TSV Neudrossenfeld, will adapt to the situation. After all, there is a lack of clarity as to why no seats have been filled.

The new constellation means that some teams have to take a break on the first and second matchdays and may not play in the season finale either. Many fans and those responsible are excited to see how these special conditions will influence the competition.

Promoters and relegators

A look at the newcomers reveals that the Bayernliga welcomes numerous new faces. A total of seven teams from five Bavarian state leagues are moving to the Bayernliga. The following teams can look forward to their championship:

  • FC Sturm Hauzenberg
  • SC Großschwarzenlohe
  • FC Coburg
  • FC Sportfreunde Schwaig
  • FC 1920 Gundelfingen

In addition, the runners-up FSV Stadeln and TuS Geretsried have also made it into the Bayernliga. On the other hand, the regional league relegated FC Eintracht Bamberg and Türkgücü Munich will play in their respective seasons, although they will not meet each other.

Course of the season and schedule

The reduced number of teams also represents a special challenge for the participants. The tension is great because the teams have to assert themselves in an increasingly competitive situation. The last matchday of the 2025/26 season is scheduled for May 16, 2026. The game plans will be published in the next 14 days so that coaches and players can prepare well.
