Kaufbeuren is celebrating: Two people celebrating their anniversary with 207 years of life experience!
On August 5, 2025, two particularly remarkable women celebrated their birthdays in Kaufbeuren: Martha Goth turned 105 and Margith Hartig celebrated her 102nd birthday. Both anniversaries bring together a proud 207 years of life experience, an achievement that is particularly impressive given the current demographic change. According to the demographic portal, there are now around 18.9 million people aged 65 and older living in Germany and this proportion will continue to rise until 2050 as more and more people are getting very old.
Mayor Stefan Bosse personally congratulated on these celebrations. In a warm speech, he wished both women a happy new year. Things are going particularly well for Martha Goth, who is known as the city's oldest citizen. She continues to live in her own apartment after moving out of the retirement home and is in excellent health. Her path originally took her from Hohenelbe in the Czech Republic via Ruderatshofen to Kaufbeuren, where she worked in a jewelry factory in Neugablonz after meeting her husband on the train to work. She owes her fame as “Grandma Martha” not least to a large online presence that she has built up over the years Allgäu newspaper reported.
Life stories full of experiences
Margith Hartig, who was born in Kukan in the Gablonz district, also has an eventful story behind her. After their expulsion, their family initially lived in Hersbruck and finally found a new home in Neugablonz on May 1, 1950. Her father founded a fire department there, while Margith attended high school in Gablonz. These roots and the shared past with Martha Goth show how strongly the local community is shaped by such life stories.
The mayor highlighted the great achievements of subsequent generations and recognized the value of the experiences and memories of the older population. Especially at a time when fewer and fewer young people are being born, the voice of older people is becoming increasingly important in promoting understanding of the challenges and opportunities that age brings. The development shows that the proportion of people over 80 has increased sevenfold compared to 1950, a trend that will continue in the coming years Demographics portal reported.
Kaufbeuren, the city with its 48,155 inhabitants, is not only the home of these two remarkable ladies, but also home to many others who can look back on hundreds of years of history and experience. The city offers numerous facilities such as the Kaufbeuren City Museum, the ESV Kaufbeuren ice hockey team and cultural events that enrich social life.
With this celebration of the role models of the past, we remember the importance of appreciating each individual's life story. In a time when society is constantly changing, it is the older generation and their stories that teach us where we come from and where we want to go.
